I submitted my essay on criterion last night, and it leveled as "Not Available."
hmm... was my writing that bad?lol or some other problem occurred?
Rab always make us challenge to discuss difficult problems which this society faces today.
The question WHY and HOW are not easy to answer , but somehow we have to deal with problems and find good solutions. About the sento which forbids foreigners, I heard that the city started to hold lessons to teach foreigners how to use sento properly in Japanese style. Both Japanese and foreigners have to make efforts to cooperate with each other. And I think the word 'respect' is always needed in encounters with people, regardless of their natinalities.
I bought a big milk pudding at a convenience store^^
happy time~♪

gooood
TGIF!(I just saw this in Kaya's blog that leaned that it means 'Thank god it's Friday')
Today was gooood Friday^^♪
During lunch time, Rab held a session for those students who would go to Edinburgh for SEA program!Thank you very much! I want to start to learn about football soon, so someone please teach me about it from the very fundamental X)
In the class, we first graded our own PWTs, which I thought was rather bad idea because we tried to do our best on the PWT and wrote what we thought was the answer. Nothing had changed since then regarding Meiland and Morgan... so I thought my answers for PWT were ok, which may not be true though.
We also used sentenceworks(was this the name?) to check our previous essay. My super-duper essay , which was B- as you saw, was corrected by the program and turned into super-duper-fantastic essay, I hope. I really enjoyed making presentation slides on Google Documents. It was useful that You Tube automatically searched for videos I wanted to put into the slide!
I felt the technology~~~
and tonight I just happened to meet my friend and somehow reached to Ball Party !
there, saori was selling frankfurts and many other friends (include shantonu! what a surprise! )were dancing X)♪♪
it was such a fun night!
hmmm~ i love dancing and drinking and chatting!
gotta sleep now
have a good weekend guys!

forgot teacher's name lol
sooory!X(
The cover teacher for Rab did very interesting lecture about American political attack ads during election time.We saw four commercials from NO position for electing John McCain/Barack Obama. It made me notice that many slanting of facts were used in those attack ads and some of them were actually terrible when you know it's back story. Being elected as the President of the US is the most important final goal and I understand that, but I thought the way they control voters' mind was rude. The voters ought to have accurate information with no slanting nor charged expressions.
I really realized the importance of critical thinking today!!

nothing to write about MEorz
taking a shower in the morning feels so good and refreshes my lazy head&body.
however, today i unconsciously slept AGAIN after taking the shower, but luckily i woke up 30mintes before the class -_-;
thanks god, i believe in you!
In the class, my group described Rab's backpack in favorably charged way. It was interesting to see the same thing from completely contrary sides. Other groups slanted the fact in good/bad ways and some slants were unique and it was fun to read them.
and so here is my slanting by use of emphasis and selection of facts.
I'm the best student in CB! I'm able to think problems critically in scientific point of view, since I was mainly studying science in past 2 years of education, whereas most of other CBs didn't. Although I sometimes do not speak up in class (like today, sorry) and seldom challenge rab, there is this saying, "Who knows most speaks least."

Is it already in a rainy season?
The weather is killing me!
Rain is soooo frustration! X(
I really hope tomorrow will be fine because we'll have picture taken by Year Book stuff during lunch time.
Don't forget guys!(i'm not sure how many CBs are actually reading this blog though-_-;)
I won't write about NP, but it was gooood in some other way, personally.hmm!
In class, we discussed the topic for second essay. I got in panic because I wasn't ready to present my idea for the topic. and so , sorry for my messy practice P&D!! I didn't have much information to talk about for my topic, neocolonialism. gotta search more now!

pwt&class&lambs
we had a PWT for the first time! Thanks god, Natsuko came on time^^!
I had rather clear ideas of answers for the given questions owning to the google document.
After the test, some of us did some crazy things on bakayama and it was amusing very much!
In class,we leaned from Rab's trick (again!) about perceptions and discussed Fisher .
Then we spent some time watching many 3D pictures (I forgot the name) . Did you know that looking at that type of pictures improve your eyesight? Since I (actually all my family members) have tragically bad eyesight, there is a book of that kind of pictures at my house in Ibaraki.
and and and funny news
yuga came to lambs dance band and we enjoyed eating, drinking and talking very much with other lambs members^^♪hehe

omg--- I'm soooo exhausted from LAMBS!
My hears are still ringing (because of loud sounds made by samba instruments) since the time I left the practice room, which was about 9:30pm. But it was a lot of fun and I LOVE how LAMBS play and dance samba^^♪♪ you guys should come and join us~
Today's class was very enjoyable but I was nervous when I talked in front of people. I'm sure many of you noticed my voice was shaking... and myself too, was shaking a little bit. I will have to discover a way to gain confidence in myself and look like a professional presentor!!
I wanna talk like Saori!^^ I'm serious~ (hey, don't laugh*_*)

The class began with Rab's trick.
Even I noticed that he was winking while he was claiming that we weren't paying good attention to what he said, I just thought some dust got into his eye! ((in any case, sorry for being late again!))
In Japan, people seldom wink and I think winking is tend to be considered as obscene (kimoi). This is a good example of nonverbal misinterpretation mentioned in Barna. It is very interesting to know that some gestures and facial expressions have particular meanings which are unique to the region.
About hand waving in Japan, because the gesture has two meaning,"come here" and "go away", I heard that there was a Maneki-neko (cat that brings fortune to people) in Asakusa which waves its hand in opposite way!! Do you get what I mean? The picture on the left is normal Maneki-neko, and the one on the right is for foreigners. It's called Dollar Cat^^haha so cute

Today's psychological test was also interesting, but I felt this time it was 20-30% accurate. When I was drawing the picture, I recalled a picture book I used to have when I was little. I guess that image of the illustration was in my mind while I drew the picture. It was funny that some other classmates had almost the same drawing as mine!!
anyways---
it was fun talking and drinking with some of you at Tomoaki's apartment^^♪
since I was soooo tired from swimming, I think didn't talk much! haha sorry
gotta read Fisher now!

CHAPTER8
Is this the last chapter?
I wonder how much I truly understood about Nisbett's work.
(Is it possible not to understand the text despite the fact that I consult a dictionary and know meanings of words? Am I lacking the ability to understand +_+?hmm...)
getting back to a main purpose of writing this blog---
In Teaching and Testing (210), Nisbett talks about different ways of fundamental understanding between Asians and Americans. It says that Asians equate silence with knowledge and speaking out loud has negative effect on representing their thoughts, whereas Americans grow up in the society where instructors demand them to speak up in classes and have no difficulty to represent their thoughts. I personally think this is true since I prefer not to speak before I fully understand the context. I am not in a habit of organizing my thought through speaking with others. In ELP class, most of the time we have discussion in groups as soon as Rab presents a question. " I need more time to think!! " is what I feel all the time, but I think I have to (want to) get used to presenting my thoughts to others!
oh, oh ,oh~by the way there was a comment posted on today's blog and I recalled that I promised to mention about Yuga's super duper great work today-^^;(sorry Yuga)! After ELP class, Yuga and I were walking to the parking lot for bicycles and there I found my key was missing! I took out everything in my bag and searched for my key, but there was NO key. ((omg what should I do!?*_*)) BUT! I followed Yuga 's advice and I got my key back♪ thank you so much----she's great!

today's class and retreat
I totally forgot that C-week was staring from today and missed the first 10 minutes of NP. (I woke up at 9:40 this morning so I was late anyway.) I noticed some other CB members were late too!^^ haha
The NP was basically about argument and I thought I already learned most of them in ELP class. and- Paul's way of speaking was easy to follow but I prefer a little more fast going and radical(?) lecture like the one done by Rab.
In 5th period, we worked on some papers to prepare ourselves to become professional essay writers! I really need to focus on not to use phrasal verbs such as "looking into" or "come up with." These phrasal verbs make my writings childish;_; hmm Need more vocabularies!
The psychological test was very interesting! I wondered why we were doing that test because I thought we were behind syllabus, but anyways I loved it so it's alright!! Kaya's adjectives for her favorite color(orange) fitted perfectly and I thought psychological test was 60-70% matching. I'm looking forward to take another test tomorrow^^♪
------
oh yes. Retreat!
Those of who were stuff members of Retreat (Yuseke, Kana, Sayaka, Yumi ...am I missing someone? ) otsukaresama~ and good work!^^
I slept well during a lecture about ICU History, but had a lot of fun talking with CB members. I was sooooooo sorry to Natsuko since she missed the bus!! I got an e-mail from Natsuko on the bus and it said "I just woke up!haha" omg- she was so cute ^^
anyways I hope she enjoyed my souvenir^^

CHAPTER7
What I like about reading The Geography of Thought is that I can discover something which has been there all the time but never being noticed. This book sometimes reveals answers to my questions I had for long long time such as "Why do Japanese people cherish charm (omamori)? It is just a small cute case with a piece of paper in it!" In this chapter I think I found the answer. Nisbett says on page 172 that East Asians are not in habit of applying logical rules to daily events and so they might accept of having contradictory believes. I personally like omamori and brought one (of course it was a charm for academic success) with me when I took entrance examination test for ICU. However I don't believe in Buddhism or what so ever, and I'm sure omamori has done nothing to my success of getting into ICU. (or maybe ...maybe it has...? -_-;)

May 12
Before the ELP class, some of us in CB were chatting on baka-yama and I heard an extremely unbelievable and crazy story from Yuga! It was about more than fifty beetles sent by her relative lol! Although the story ended with grotesque, I thought it was very funny (Natsuko was pale though!).
In the class, we analyzed the news paper article about deleting English test from entrance examination because it makes students dislike English. I thought it was obvious that the statement was not supported by rational reasons, but I had difficulties realizing that the news article was actually red herring. I think I have this tendency to focus on what's in front of me and just accept it. I really need to do CRITICAL THINKINGGGGG!
well well well,
tonight is going to be a party~♪
plus tomorrow and the day after tomorrow are going to be retreat~♪
so much fun to go^_^ (I hope)!!

I hate rain but today I went to ICU on foot. It's just what I do when I feel like listening to music♪ I also didn't want to spend 210yen for bus! It's tooooo expensive! In my hometown, there is Kappa-go (name of a small bus) which is ran by city and it's free to ride. so let's do demo guys^_^
anyways-
In today's class, there was a lady visitor from monbu-kagakusyo and as always, Rab taught us many interesting and incredible stuff. First we were given handouts about arguments and assumptions. Some assumptions were easy to catch and some were not. I needed to extend my imagination so that I could think of people living in completely different surroundings from myself. Most of the time I missed some points and couldn't find specific assumptions.
After that, we got into groups and tried to find assumptions in What Went Wrong? . This was so fun and was amazing to know cultural and religious ways of thinking in other countries! Rad also let us discuss about to what extent one can keep his/her cultural habit. As in saying, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do," I thought one should adapt oneself to the new environment in order to get along well with local people. But in case of super-duper strong alcohol..... hmm I need to rethink about my point of view (oh anyways, I'm still under twenty).
We're living in a global society and may have a lot of chances to encounter people from different cultures. When we get to know each other, it's always essential not to have assumptions and we need to face differences between people. I guess I really need to read and learn about the Scottish before I go to Edinburgh for SEA program!^^

Rab talked about assumptions in statements and I thought it was rare not to have assumptions in them. If I try not to have assumptions when writing an essay, I'll never be able to finish it! and- It was surprising to realize that background, for instance one's nationality, of a person defines whether the statement is valid or not. However I want to believe that all human beings care about a million Koreans' deaths.
tomorrow we'll have visitors from some media company(?)!
but my concern is that all girls in CB have swimming class in 5th period, so we'll all be late!-_-
sorry Rab!

CHAPTER6
In my opinion, so far this chapter is the most interesting one.
It is amazing to actually realize my process of comprehension.
Nisbett says in the chapter that Greeks see things in the category with the same attributes and focus on the one-many organization, but on the other hand, Chinese classify things together according to their relationships and focus on the part-whole representation. I myself tried to group pictures on page141 and page 143 as I read through and ended up doing exactly the same as what Nisbett describes as a feature of Easterner. This surprised me a lot because it was obvious to me that cow goes with grass, and not with chicken (also, monkey with banana, and not with panda)! Seeing the same picture and digesting in different ways sounds very interesting fact to me.
maybe this gets off the subject, but by reading this chapter, I recalled a moving picture which a professor showed us in my biology class. It was called The Right Brain vs Left Brain. http://shinasfo.exblog.jp/6684608/ (can you see this?)
Which way did she turn around? Some people say right and some other people say left, even though they are looking at the same moving picture! It is amazing how we recognize things differently.

CHAPTER5
This chapter emphasized on tendencies people have when they consider something. Westerners focus on personality factors whereas Easterners focus on context. Nisnett describes this statement with a lot of interesting research results and examples. I got a clear view of the difference by reading an example about what was focused on New York Times (in America) and World Journal (in China) when those two are reporting on the same mass murder case done by McIlvane. The former focuses on MacIlvane's personal dispositions as Westerners give attention to focal object or person, and the latter focuses on his situational factors as Easterners attend greater importance to the context.
Now that I know that there are obvious differences in ways of thinking, it is strange that I am somehow brought up to think in Eastern style of thinking. I wonder what kind of person I'd be if I were born and grew up in America for my entire life.

already May!
in the 5th period, we did a practice PWT. since I didn't reread the whole Meiland during GW, my essay got a bit short (that's what rab mentioned on my essay too) and it was embarrassing to share it with Izumi. i hope she'll grade it severely so that i'll realize how stupid i am -_-haha
anyways i'll find some time to organize my mind about what's written on Meiland
and---
today's latter half of the class was very shocking. the DVD rab showed us taught me how ignorant i am. i didn't know any of those demos going on in the past. i realized that i was living in the world which conceals dark secrets . i think there is someone who tries to reveal all those badness to people, but i just don't get to know about it through media. eagerness to obtain the truth is what we need right now. if people have wills, there is a way! a big problem is that people don't know that they don't know. hmm
i'll start by telling what i leaned in this class to my family in ibaraki!

CHAPTER4
As I read through this chapter, I surprised how I fit the way Nisbitt wrote about Asians.
Which means I'm a typical Japanese and I totally agree with it^^ haha
Yesterday in ILC, we discussed whether we demonstrate or not when we have a chance to change something. Kana and I talked after class that maybe we would demonstrate if everyone else did, but not alone. We thought it this way because we didn't have habit to protest something to upper class people, which I think is very common (and not an admirable habit) among Japanese. Nisbitt said on pg98 about the adage "there's safety in numbers," which was exactly what Kana and I were talking about. Now, as a typical Japanese, I think all Japanese had better change at the same time and start expressing their own ideas to whoever in control!
Which means I'm a typical Japanese and I totally agree with it^^ haha

We thought it this way because we didn't have habit to protest something to upper class people, which I think is very common (and not an admirable habit) among Japanese. Nisbitt said on pg98 about the adage "there's safety in numbers," which was exactly what Kana and I were talking about. Now, as a typical Japanese, I think all Japanese had better change at the same time and start expressing their own ideas to whoever in control!
